Paywall: The Business of Scholarship is a documentary which focuses on the need for open access to research and science, questions the rationale behind the $25.2 billion a year that flows into for-profit academic publishers, examines the 35-40% profit margin associated with the top academic publisher Elsevier and looks at how that profit margin is often greater than some of the most profitable tech companies like Apple, Facebook, and Google.

The film screening will be followed by a moderated discussion, featuring:

  • Aria Chernik (Duke), Founder and Director, OSPRI (Open Source Pedagogy, Research + Innovation), and Lecturing Fellow in the Social Science Research Institute
  • Jennifer Jenkins (Duke), Clinical Professor of Law and Director, Center for the Study of the Public Domain
  • Charles Piot (Duke), Chair and Professor of Cultural Anthropology and African and African American Studies
  • Elise Smith (NIEHS), Postdoctoral Fellow, National Institutes of Environmental Health Sciences
  • Moderated by Paolo Mangiafico, Scholarly Communications Strategist, Duke University Libraries.

Presented by Duke University Libraries, Duke University Science and Society, Advancing Scientific Integrity, Services, and Training (ASIST), the Office of the Vice Provost for Interdisciplinary Studies, and the Office of the Vice Provost for the Arts—Duke Arts.
